A child is struggling in science. The marks say so, the teacher says so, and soon everyone agrees on the diagnosis: weak in science. Tuitions are arranged. More science is applied to the problem.
But watch that child actually work, and you may find something strange. It’s not the science that stops them. It’s the graph. The question hangs its meaning on a line climbing across a grid — and the child has never really been taught what a graph says: that a point is two facts at once, that steepness is speed, that the axes are the sentence and the line is what happened. They can recite the chapter. They cannot read the picture the exam printed next to it.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth about textbooks — all of them, ours included until we started checking: every book leans on a floor of skills that no chapter anywhere teaches. Reading a graph. Reading a table without drowning in it. Following a flow diagram’s arrows in the right order. Reading a timeline, a map key, a labelled figure. Rough mental arithmetic — is this answer even in the right neighbourhood? Interpreting “compare,” “explain,” and “justify” as different instructions rather than one vague command.
Nobody teaches these because everybody assumes them. The science book assumes the maths class covered graphs; the maths class did coordinates as geometry, not graphs as sentences; the geography book assumes both. Each subject points at another, and the skill falls between them — permanently. A child who happened to pick it up somewhere cruises. A child who happened to miss it pays a quiet tax on every single page, in every subject that uses the skill — and then gets a verdict: weak in science. Weak in geography. Weak.
The cruelty of it is the mislabelling. The gap is small, specific, and utterly teachable — an afternoon’s honest work, sometimes less. But because it’s invisible, it never gets an afternoon. It gets years of “needs to work harder” instead, and the child slowly agrees to the verdict.
So this is a thing we now do to every book we make, and it sounds almost bureaucratic until you see what it catches: we audit the book for what it silently assumes. We go through the chapters asking one question — what does this page expect the child to already know how to do, without ever saying so? Every answer goes on a list. And then the book pays its own debts: the skills on that list get taught, plainly and early, in the book itself — a toolkit the reader is given before the book starts drawing cheques against it.
If your child is “weak” in a subject, it may be worth an evening of detective work before any more tuition: sit beside them, watch exactly where they stop, and ask what the page was assuming at that moment. You may find the problem was never the subject at all — just a skill that fell between the subjects, waiting for someone to notice it was never anyone’s job to teach.
